Work on this project began in 2013 and included community & stakeholder engagement before developing an urban and landscape design framework or masterplan. Key urban and landscape design decisions were made through this process, including where to locate the Shared Use Path, how to add community value through the provision of open spaces, and how to represent mana whenua values. Following this, specimen urban and landscape plans were drawn up that informed the Design and Construction (D&C) tender process. Although working for a different firm at the time, Shannon lead the bulk of this work through to tender evaluation. 

 

After establishing Wayfinder, Shannon was asked to continue design reviews on the project, which often meant working closely with the contractor’s design team (WSP) – often leading them to the desired outcomes. The many years following, various team members across Wayfinder have been involved in the MSQA process, acting as Waka Kotahi’s key urban and landscape advisors. 

 

Key celebrations from this project include the installation of various iwi artworks across the project, especially the large sculpture at the northern end of the Auckland Botanic Gardens, the design and oversight of the Te Mare o Hine shared use bridge, and the creation of a micro-park on Taakanini Point.
