Opera Precinct Laneway

The design of a small pedestrian laneway between the iconic Hawke’s Bay Opera House and the historical Municipal Building.

On this project we worked closely with Justin Matthews of Matthews & Matthews Architects to envisage and develop the laneway behind the Hastings Municipal Building. This was a tight space that served not only as the emergency escape routes from the Opera House, but also as an important functions and hospitality area. During our masterplanning phase, we identified that some changes to activity in the building were necessary, and together with Justin we presented an option to the Council to reimagine the location of the restaurant area, so that it would directly open to the laneway. After this significant change, what followed was a relatively straightforward design process to establish some greenery (including a singular, well placed tree to help guide people into the space), simple seating (reflecting the balconies within the Opera House), and paving detail to connect with the heritage architecture.
