Kaeo Bridge
- Location: Northland / Auckland
Prepared landscape and urban design plans for a replacement road bridge north of Kaeo, Northland.
This project was part of the wider sweep of upgrades to a number of bridges across Northland, and involved replacing a single-lane bridge with an upgraded dual-lane bridge and intersection.
Through the optioneering phase, we worked closely with the flood modelling experts to consider an appropriate location for the new bridge, balancing with cost constraints and landscape outcomes. Various options that would have provided a good transport link were ruled out as they would have resulted in increased river impedance – increasing risk in an area already highly prone to floods.
During this process, we also worked closely with two hapu to identify potential cultural outcomes, and consider how these could be embedded into the design. We helped the iwi appointed artists shape their ideas into concepts suitable for roading infrastructure, and helped them visualise these for the wider group.
We also worked closely with the ecologists to consider appropriate planting plans, before developing these into full construction sets. After working through the consenting process, we assisted with quality assurance through the construction phases.
