Mission Estate Masterplan

Exploring options to enhance the long term profitability and use of the land owned by the country’s oldest winery: Mission Estate Wines.

Several years prior to this project, Marist Holdings subdivided and sold off a large portion of their land to become the Mission Hills residential area of Napier. This project was focused on the balance land around the vineyard and winery, seeking to update and refresh work undertaken by Isthmus Group many years previously.

Our instructions from the Board were relatively straightforward – find a way to balance the heritage values of the site with long term development options. Nothing was off the table, and together with our friends at Mitchell Daysh we set off on a path to explore what we could achieve with the site. Ultimately this concluded with a detailed multi-criteria analysis of a variety of potential development options.

The final plan, which has now been through an approvals process as part of the Napier District Plan Review, provides for a range of residential, commercial and tourism opportunities across the site. This includes retention of the winery and production operation on the site, but integrating it with other artisan activities such as a brewery or crafts. Space is provided to expand the winery operation, and to retain the iconic Mission Concert venue.
