Southern Rail Stations

Landscape and Urban Design for three new rail stations in South Auckland: Drury Central, Ngākōroa and Paerātā.

To prepare for growth in the South Auckland area, KiwiRail (together with partner agencies Auckland Transport and Waka Kotahi) has provided funding to develop three new rail stations. We teamed with Aurecon to provide holistic landscape and urban design services for the project.

Initially the work involved scoping the projects to determine a reverse-brief. This involved direct engagement with mana whenua, and then cross-discipline development of the design vision. We also developed knowledge of the landscape context for each station, together with the cultural and environmental outcomes sought for the project.

We then prepared detailed landscape planting plans for each site, including detailing stormwater wetlands, slope-stabilisation, CPTED reduction and sightline management. Together with the project architects, we assisted with the detailing of urban realm elements such as paving detail, seating and bike stands. All plans were integrated with the wider architectural and engineering plans, and worked through multiple revisions to consider value-engineering, consenting and changing client requirements.

With all projects now consented and tendered, we remain as lead landscape advisors through the construction management phase of each project.
